Barabati Stadium stands on the ruins of Barabati Fort, Cuttack. The entire area occupies 25 acres of land. The stadium is the venue of various sports events for the city as well as the state having impressive structure. Near to the Batabati stadium, there is Jawaharlal Nehru indoor stadium having a seating capacity of 6000 viewers. The seating capacity of Barabati stadium is nearly 48000 viewers.
Barabati Stadium has a rich cricketing history. It hosted its first One Day International (ODI) match in January 1982 between India and England, and its first Test match in 1987 featuring India and Sri Lanka. Over the years, it has been a venue for several memorable matches, including games during the 1987 and 1996 Cricket World Cups. Notably, former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri scored the first international century at this ground in 1984 .
Recognizing the need for modernization, the Odisha government, in collaboration with the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has initiated a comprehensive redevelopment plan for Barabati Stadium. The project, estimated at ₹600 crore, aims to transform the stadium into a world-class sports complex with a seating capacity of 60,000, up from the current 42,000 .
