Maa Sureswari temple is located on the banks of Tel River in Sonepur town. The holy seat of Goddess Sureswari is the presiding deity of the Subarnapur. History of Maa Sureswari Temple
According to legend, Parashurama, after wandering around the earth many times and losing most of the Kshatriya warriors, built a temple in Sonepur district of Odisha, and with the instructions of Mata Renuka, he installed Goddess Sureshwari. History says that during the reign of Somasvuli, Mata Sureshwari was worshipped as the presiding deity of her fort, and it is also believed that the ruler of Somavanshi Dharmarath installed Goddess Sureshwari. The temple was built many years later during the reign of the Chauhan king Achal Singhdeo (1725–1750) and then expanded during the reign of Maharaja Virmitra Singhdeo (1902–1937).
Astabhuja Mahishamardhin Durga is worshipped in the form of Maa Sureshwari. Astabhuja Ganesha in the eastern part, Chaturbhuja Bagala in the west, Shiva in the north, and Dashabhuja Durga in the south are worshipped as side deities. During Ramnavami, which is in the month of Chaitra, Basantika Puja is celebrated grandly, and to see that celebration, a large number of devotees visit the temple.
