Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary & Tiger Reserve, Angul

Satkosia Tiger Reserve is located about 120 km distance from the Angul district of Odisha. Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 988.30 km². The Wildlife Sanctuary was created in 1976 with an area of 796 km². The Reserve was designated in 2007 as the Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary and the adjacent Baisipalli Wildlife Sanctuary. This place extends along a 22 km long gorge of the Mahanadi Eastern Ghats mountain range.

The major plant communities are mixed deciduous forests including Sal and riverine forest. Mammals in this Satkoshia forest include leopards, Indian wild dogs or wild pigs, striped hyenas, sloth bears, leopards and jungle cats. Major herbivores are Asian elephants, spotted deer, sambar deer, barking deer, langur, porcupine and pangolin are other herbivores found here. Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most popular tourist places in Angul.

The Mugger Crocodile and gharials are also found here. Among other reptiles, the Indian python is found here, which prey on large mammals like wild deer. The Indian giant squirrel is also found in the Wildlife Sanctuary. This place also has many fish, like catfish, which can weigh about 30 kilograms. There is also a nature camp available for visitors.
