The Gadamadhupur Royal King’s Palace, also known as the Rajbati of Madhupurgarh, is a historic royal residence located in Gadamadhupur village, approximately 08 km from Dharmasala and 33 km from Jajpur town. Built in the 16th century, this palace stands as a testament to the region’s rich cultural and architectural heritage. The palace showcases traditional Odia architecture, characterized by intricate carvings and robust, well-built structures. Its proximity to the Jagannath Temple and the surrounding natural beauty, including nearby hills and lush greenery, adds to its allure.
Gadamadhupur Jagannath Temple
The palace complex includes the Gadamadhupur Jagannath Temple, a significant religious site that mirrors the architectural style of the renowned Jagannath Temple in Puri. This temple has been a focal point for local religious activities and festivals for centuries. The palace and temple complex have also served as shooting locations for various Odia films and television serials, highlighting their cultural significance. The royal family of Madhupurgarh continues to play an active role in preserving the cultural traditions associated with the palace and temple. Notably, Queen Aparna Dhir Singh made history by performing the ‘Chhera Pahanra’ ritual during the Rath Yatra festival, becoming the first queen in Odisha to do so. This act, traditionally reserved for kings, underscores the evolving role of women in upholding and participating in sacred customs.
Despite its historical and cultural importance, the Gadamadhupur Palace faces challenges related to preservation and maintenance. Lack of adequate funding and support has led to concerns about the deterioration of this heritage site. Local initiatives, such as heritage walks and community engagement programs, aim to raise awareness and garner support for the conservation of the palace and its associated structures. Gadamadhupur Palace is a tourist attraction in Jajpur.
