Tikarpada Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the banks of the Mahanadi River, 58 km from the district headquarters in Angul and 180 km from Cuttack. It spans a 22 km long stretch that is popular among tourists. The dense forest, rich wildlife, and crocodile sanctuary are the main attractions of the area. The sanctuary is named after the nearby village of Tikarpada. This Wildlife sanctuary was built by the Odisha Government primarily for the breeding and propagation of Gharial crocodiles. Apart from gharial, it is also home to tigers, leopards, elephants, pangolins, red junglefowl, Indian pitta and Indian assistant crane species, making it a prime spot for wildlife watching.
The sanctuary covers an area of 795.52 square km, making it one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in Odisha. Tikarpada is a breeding ground for gharial crocodiles, which are later released into the Mahanadi River. The sanctuary is an ideal tourist destination. Tikarpada Crocodile Sanctuary is considered one of the best tourist spots and picnic destinations in Angul, Odisha. There is a Nature Camp near the Wildlife Sanctuary that includes a beautiful park, boating facilities, a viewpoint, a resort, and cottages. Many migrating birds visit the sanctuary during winter, such as the hornbill, racket-tailed drongo, and serpent eagle, which attracts birdwatchers and photographers.
