Lokanatha Temple, Puri

Lokanatha Temple is situated approximately 2 km from the Jagannath Temple in Puri. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to legends, Lord Rama himself installed the Shiva Lingam in this temple during his exile. The temple has been a centre of Shaivite worship for centuries, and devotees believe that visiting Jagannath Temple is incomplete without seeking blessings at Lokanath Temple. Maha Shivratri is the biggest celebration here, when the temple comes alive with lakhs of devotees, chanting and offering prayers through the night.

The Shiva Lingam, always submerged under water, serves as the main attraction here. A natural underground stream keeps the Lingam covered, symbolising purity and divine energy. It is only once a year, during the festival of Pankodhar Ekadashi (a few days before Maha Shivratri), that the water is drained, and devotees can see the Lingam directly. This rare darshan attracts thousands of pilgrims. The Lokanath Temple in Puri is not just another Shiva temple; it is a place where faith and divinity converge. The mystery of the submerged Lingam, the age-old rituals, and the strong belief of devotees make it a sacred jewel of Odisha’s spiritual heritage.
