The Mundia Hanuman temple is located atop a hill near Mardarajpur, 4 km from Khandapada and 22 km distance from Nayagarh town. Lord Hanuman is the main deity here. As this temple is on a hilltop, it is called Mundia Hanuman. To reach the temple, one has to climb the stairs through the mountain tunnel, which makes the journey exciting. Apart from the Hanuman temple, there is also a temple of Goddess Kanaka Durga and Lord Jagannath. According to some devotees, this place is similar to the temple of Goddess Ghanteswari in Odisha.
There are two small hills here: Mundiya Hanuman Temple on the east side, while the western side hill is associated with the mythological story of Draupadi’s Swayambar meeting place, the Bhishma statue, Chaitanya Statue, Nataraja, Dashavatara, Maa Kanaka Durga, the scene of rescuing the elephant from the Radha Krishna statue, and Goddess Durga. Mundia Hanuman Mandir is one of the famous temples and tourist attractions in Nayagarh, Odisha. Fategarh Ram Mandir is 22 km from Mundia Hanuman temple.
- According to locals, the temple was built during the British colonial period by young men who joined forces with the Khandapada king, who defeated the British.
- The temple earns its name because “mundia” refers to a small elevated structure in the local vernacular.
- There are nearly 70 smaller shrines around, with Hanuman as the principal deity. Temples for Goddess Kanaka Durga and Lord Jagannath are also present.
