The Second Chilika, locally called Mini Chilika, is located in the Pallahara subdivision of Angul district, Odisha. The backwater region of the Rengali Dam is popularly known as the Second Chilika. This vast freshwater wetland has earned the name Second Chilika due to its rich birdlife, expansive water spread, and serene natural beauty. It is an ideal destination for nature lovers, birdwatchers, photographers, and Eco-tourism enthusiasts seeking offbeat locations in Odisha. The Rengali Reservoir is one of the largest artificial reservoirs in Odisha, created by the Rengali Dam on the Brahmani River. The reservoir covers an area of approximately 25,250 square Km. Dense forests, hills, and rocky terrain surround the dam, creating a picturesque landscape.
The area is home to a wide variety of resident and migratory birds, including the Great Water Plover, Red-necked Grebe, Pelican, Ibis, and Gannet. Recognising its ecological importance, Odisha Tourism is developing this region as a new Eco-tourism destination, highlighting the natural beauty and biodiversity of the second Chilika. During the monsoon and winter seasons, the wetland expands significantly, creating a lagoon-like appearance similar to Chilika Lake(Mini Chilika).
It is an ideal spot for a peaceful picnic amidst nature. Surrounded by dense forests, rolling hills, and vast stretches of freshwater, the area provides a serene and refreshing environment, offering a welcome respite from crowded tourist destinations. Visitors can enjoy family picnics, group outings, and eco-friendly gatherings while soaking in scenic views of the reservoir. The wide open spaces along the water’s edge are perfect for relaxing, photography, and spending quality time with friends and family.
