The fairly large-sized temple of Yameshwar, also known as the Jameshwar Temple, features a vimana and Jaganmohan, situated within a spacious compound to the south of the Bharti Matha, and is an important ancient monument. It stands on a high plinth, similar to the Anata Vasudev temple, which it resembles in terms of structural features, richness, and affluence of decoration. Yameshwar is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped by Yama, hence it is also known as Jameshwar. The Mitreswar and the Varuneswar are standing side by side within an enclosure to the east of the Yameswara. Jameshwar Temple is one of the famous old temples in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
The temple’s outer walls are richly carved with motifs including Dikpalas (guardians), nayikas, erotic couples, elephant processions, and more. Inside, the garbhagriha houses a Shivalinga mounted on a circular yoni-pitha. The temple celebrates Jiuntia (also known as Puajiutia or Dwitvahana Osha) during the month of Ashwin, a popular festival in this region. Other key observances include Shivaratri, Kartik Purnima, all Mondays, and Sankramana days. Devotees consider visiting on the Bharani nakshatra auspicious, as it is believed to bring relief from miseries.
