The Maa Budhi Thakurani temple is situated in the Bada Bazaar area of Berhampur, approximately 3 km from the Berhampur New Bus Stand. The temple is dedicated to Maa Budhi Thakurani, a local goddess revered as the guardian deity (Ista Devi) of Berhampur (Silk City) in Ganjam district. According to history, the Thakurani Yatra began hundreds of years ago. The Dera community, known as Desibehera, started this puja. According to legend, the Raja Saheb of Mahuri invited them to weave silk and settle in the Ganjam region.
A popular legend goes: Desibehera once saw a young woman crying at night and invited her to his house. The girl disappeared. Later, while offering flowers to the Goddess, he received a divine message that since he had played the role of a father, the Goddess Budhi Thakurani would visit his house every year. Thus, the tradition of the Yatra (visiting the parents’ house) has continued to date. Thakurani Yatra is a major festival associated with this temple, which is celebrated once every two years for about 28 to 30 days. It is usually held in the month of Chaitra. During this time, the Goddess Thakurani leaves her temple and stays in a temporary abode in the area of Desibehera (which is considered her “parental home”). Maa Budhi Thakurani Mandir is a popular tourist attraction in Berhampur.
