Tourists cannot set foot on the island; boats stop about 200 m from boundary markers for birdwatching only. Entry into the sanctuary core is restricted to researchers and officials, and during the Chilika Bird Festival (January), with special permission and prior registration. Nalbana Island itself is not open for picnics due to its status as a core wildlife sanctuary, but picnic activities are allowed nearby, especially at Barkul, Balugaon, and Satapada, which offer boat access, scenic views, and facilities.
