Ramachandi Temple, Gadamanitri, Khordha

Maa Ramachandi Temple is located at Gadamanitri in the Khordha district, which is 48 km distance from Bhubaneswar. Goddess Ramachandi is worshipped here beneath or within a large rock formation. The idol is said to have been revealed from a big rock and is seated on a lotus. The adjoining hill is popularly known as “Gobardhan Thali.” There are about 80 steps that connect the ground with the hilltop. The picturesque scenery, serene atmosphere, green trees and creepers, and beautiful caves surrounded by mango groves and encircled with cornfields enhance the beauty of Ramachandi Hill.

History of Maa Ramachandi

According to the Temple priest, Lord Ram came here during his exile, and since then, the goddess has been worshipped here. Perched atop the serene, forest-clad hill of Gadamanitri in Khordha, Maa Ramachandi is venerated not merely as a goddess but as the guardian spirit of the land—a deity deeply rooted in nature, history and the collective faith of the people. She is often revered as the Fort Goddess, protecting the surrounding villages with her unseen yet powerful presence. Unlike most deities enshrined within temple structures, Maa Ramachandi defies boundaries—she emerges directly from the earth in the form of a majestic black granite rock, vertically rising to a great height. On Ram Navami, a sacrifice is made at the bottom of the temple, where thousands of devotees from nearby villages flock here.

This natural monolith, believed to be her self-manifested (Swayambhu) form, stands boldly under the open sky, radiating raw divine energy and eternal strength. As visitors ascend the winding path to the summit they are welcomed by a pair of fierce lion sculptures—stone sentinels guarding the sanctity of the hilltop. These stone lions, seated on either side of the entrance gate, symbolize the might and majesty of the goddess. Ram Navami, Dussehra Saptami, Raja Parba and Panchu Dola Yatra are traditional festivals, where devotees come together in spiritual unity. Maa Ramachandi Mandir is a tourist attraction in Khodha. There are picnic areas for tourists at the foot of the mountain and all the facilities for feasting. There are free parking, Panthanivas, shops, toilets and rest facilities near the temple.
