Bhimkund Waterfall & Picnic Spot, Keonjhar

Bhimkund Picnic Spot is a natural reservoir located on the border of Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts in Odisha. It is about 35 km from Ghatagaon Maa Tarini Temple and 37 km from Karanjia. While the site is more famous from the Mayurbhanj side, the Keonjhar side also offers beautiful access to this mystical spot. Bhimkund is a natural pool formed by the Baitarani River, which cascades down from a rocky gorge to create a waterfall and a serene, deep pool of blue water. The Mayurbhanj side is visible from the Keonjhar side, and the distance between them is approximately 1 km.

The main attraction of this place is a large watchtower in the middle of the Bhimkund waterfall, from which you can see both the Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj sides from the top. The entry fee for the watchtower is only ₹10. There are all kinds of facilities for picnics on the Keonjhar side. There is a picnic area with 48 Pindis, which costs ₹150, and a water facility for cooking. There is sufficient vehicle parking and some shops at this picnic spot. Bhimkund waterfall is a tourist attraction in Keonjhar District.

History of Bhimkund

According to legend, it is believed that Lord Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata, created this kund (pool) by striking the ground with his mace (gada) to quench Draupadi’s thirst during their exile. People take holy dips here during Makar Sankranti, believing the water has healing properties. There is a temple dedicated to Maa Ganga, a Shiva temple on the banks of Bhimkund, along with many small and large Shivling and a large Lord Bhima Statue. According to locals, there is a path of black granite stones through Bhimkund, which the Pandavas supposedly used to travel from the Keonjhar side to the Mayurbhanj side. Interestingly, while all the surrounding Stones are red, the Stones on this path are black, leading to the belief that this pathway was specially built for their passage.
